SAVOIR-VIVRE #3
SEED WORKSHOP

June 26, 2019, 5:00 PM—8:00 PM

in the garden behind the gallery space

with permaculturalist Elisabeth Kössler, in collaboration with the Verein Sortengarten Südtirol (South Tyrol Variety Garden Association)

curated by Simone Mair

Seeds are cultural heritage; we collect, store and propagate them. After a visit to the exhibition CACHE (Insurance Policy) by artist Jumana Manna, whose work deals with the acts of storing, collecting and preserving both natural resources and cultural artefacts, the garden behind the gallery will host a seed workshop with Elisabeth Kössler.

Kössler has been running her farm according to the principles of permaculture. This approach prioritizes biodiversity, cyclical working patterns and sustainability. Kössler will talk about various aspects of seeds in relation to the exhibition: What does ‘seedfast’ mean? What is a hybrid seed? How do you propagate seeds? Workshop participants will then get a hands-on introduction to the cleaning, sorting, sowing and harvesting of seeds.

The SEED WORKSHOP is part of the workshop series savoir-vivre, which is conceived in parallel to the ar/ge kunst exhibition programme. The title savoir-vivre is based on a re-reading of the terms savoir and pouvoir in the work of Gayatri Spivak, co-founder of postcolonial theory, where knowledge (savoir) is not only linked to power but also to the condition of being able to (pouvoir). This combination of verbs turns the institution into a public space of negotiation and agency where an exploration of different forms of skills and competences produces collective knowledge.
